Effects of within-field wildflower strips on the breeding bird community of a large arable field in the Eastern Hills of Schleswig-Holstein

During a pilot study in the Eastern Hills of Schleswig-Holstein from 2016 to 2021 it was tested if and how a conventionally farmed arable field (52 ha) can be improved for the indicator group of arable breeding birds by creating wildflower strips in the middle of the field (present rotation: winter rape Brassica napus, winter wheat Triticum aestivum, winter barley Hordeum vulgare). To test the effects of the strips, three years without wildflower strips (2016, 2020, 2021) were compared to three other years in which different mixtures of flowering plants were tested in two within-field strips (2017-2019, annual cultivar mix and perennial legume mix, width of strips 12 m, total of 3,9% of field area).
The total number of detected territories of birds that can be counted as arable breeding birds according to their habitat requirements was on average 1.9 times as
high in the three years with wildflower strips as in the three years without the strips (factor 1.3 to 3.3 when comparing single years). The higher total numbers of territories were mainly due to larger numbers of Skylarks Alauda arvensis, whose territories were distributed over the two wildflower strips and who occurred with on average 2.4 times (1.7 times to 4.0 times when comparing single years) the number of territories in years with wildflower strips as in years without wildflower strips present. The two other documented species from the guild of arable breeding birds, the Quail Coturnix coturnix and the Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava had more territories in one of the three years with flowering strips, respectively.
Evaluation of the results points to the possibility that comparable arable fields on fertile soils in Schleswig-Holstein could be improved for agriculture-breeding birds (especially Skylarks) by establishing annual wildflower strips as breeding habitat within fields, without causing a significant reduction of agricultural productivity. However, if the strips are established in the same areas year after year there is the risk that wildflowers will spread which are considered problematic from an agricultural point of view (such as creeping thistle Cirsium arvense), so that farmers will fear reduced yield or harvesting problems and will not continue the project. During this pilot study this was the case in the third year of testing the wildflower strips. It is therefore recommended to closely monitor vegetation development in wildflower strips that remain on the same part of the field, in order to be able to react to negative developments in time. This requires a subsidy regime that allows intervention in the vegetation development and/or a flexible removal or relocation of wildflower strips from one year to the next. Because the study took place on just one field, the conclusions drawn from the results cannot be widely extrapolated. The effects of within-field establishment of wildflower strips should therefore be studied in a larger sample of suitable arable fields.
