Abstract

We studied breeding population trends and reproduction rates of the Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg for the period 1969 to 2019. This paper presents the results of data collection over 50 years, and also addresses problems such as information capture and knowledge gaps. The paper also contains an extensive discussion of population dynamics and various hypotheses that could explain our results.
We have classified all Red-necked Grebes on a breeding site during the courtship and breeding season as breeding birds, including birds that may not have bred there. In the period 1969–2019, an average of around 555 pairs bred annually in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. Initially (1969–1978) the number of breeding pairs was almost constant, fluctuating annually at around 350 pairs, thereafter (1979–1990) the number increased to approx. 725 pairs; finally (1991–2019) the number was more constant again and averaged around 655 pairs, with a range from approx. 525 to approx. 720 pairs (Tab. 1, Tab. 2 and Fig. (= Abb.) 4).
The distribution did not change significantly during the course of the research. The largest number of breeding birds and breeding places are still found in the Eastern Uplands (Östliches Hügelland) with its many bodies of water. A number of new breeding waters emerged during the study period, particularly in south-eastern Holstein and on the Geest.
Breeding Red-necked Grebes prefer shallow waters with an abundance of submerged vegetation (fishponds, natural ponds, lagoons). The majority of the birds settle in small bodies of water. Fishponds have lost much of their attraction during the study period. However, those that are no longer managed (i. e. have no artificial fish stock), but are drained annually, are often still showing high numbers of breeding Red-necked Grebes.
During the study period, the average number of young per family (brood size) was 1.57 (n = 6,227 families; Tab. 1). The brood success, i. e. the percentage of pairs raising at least one young, was 37 % (n = 16,760 pairs). The brood success fluctuated annually from 14 % to 68 % (Tab. 1), amounted to 43 % both in the period 1969–1978 and 1979–1990, and then decreased to 34 % (1991–2019) (Tab. 2 and Fig. (= Abb.) 4).
Schleswig-Holstein lies on the limit of the distribution area for the species; however, the population does not show the typical characteristics of an ‚edge‘ population. First, the number of breeding pairs is quite high, also in comparison to eastern areas. Second, there are very high breeding densities (up to 8.00 bp/ha inland and up to 13.3 bp/ha on waters near the coast). Third, numerous bodies of water are inhabited by the species.
The brood success in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg is usually less than in areas further to the east of Europe. Bad weather can cause many chicks to die, and heavy/driving rain and strong winds often occur in areas with a maritime climate such as Schleswig-Holstein, more than in areas further away from the ocean.
The population regulation in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg in the periods with relatively stable populations is primarily caused by territorial behaviour, i.e. by density-dependent factors. Birds that occupy vacant territories are probably hatched here. In the period 1991–2019 the number of breeding pairs was at a much higher level than 1969–1978. This suggests that the habitat quality between 1991 and 2019 was more favourable than 1969–1978 due to density-independent factors. The four most important factors are believed to be:
1. Increase in the number of mild winters over the past 30 years. As a result, more and more Red-necked Grebes survived the wintertime, so that there were enough birds to occupy territories that became free, as well as newly created bodies of water.
2. Increase in the number of new bodies of water. The number of breeding birds in new shallow waters (dammed ponds, flooded areas, excavated ponds, soil extractions, flushing areas etc.) explain almost a fifth of the population increase in the 1980s. However, many newly created waters lose their attractiveness over time. Despite the population decline in many fishponds and older shallow waters, there is still a large population in the study area, which is partly explained by the continuous formation of new ponds.
3. Less human persecution. In the study area, direct pursuit of grebes has decreased significantly.
4. Increase in precipitation. It became progressively wetter in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg during the study period. However, there were large fluctuations in the amount of precipitation from year to year. When the water level in the ponds is good, there are many breeding opportunities for the grebes, although not in dry years, but the change in water levels improves the food supply for the birds in the long term. At lower water levels, lush swamp or land vegetation develops. If these plants are flooded, they decompose and many aquatic arthropods, the main food of Red-necked Grebes, feed on this dead organic matter.
The increase in precipitation (especially heavy rain events) had a negative effect on brood success (newly hatched chicks are highly vulnerable to chilling and large numbers may be killed during heavy rainfall). Apparently, however, the reproduction of the Red-necked Grebe was high enough to increase the population in the period 1979–1990 and to keep it at high level from 1991 to 2019 (Tab. 2). How long the reproductive capacity, which has been declining since 1991, can continue to diminish without affecting the breeding population cannot be said.
A low brood success, a small family size and almost no second broods indicate that Red-necked Grebes belong to the K-strategists among the grebes. It is possible that Red-necked Grebes show a more pronounced K-strategy in many waters in Schleswig-Holstein than members of the same species further east, partly because the migration route from Schleswig-Holstein to the marine moulting and wintering areas is short, so that the birds are less exposed to hazards during migration.
