The Grey Heron Ardea cinerea colony in the Domänental near Kiel in 2024 – with summaries of previous findings

This article summarises the biological results of previous studies and supplements them with some new data. It ist he result of 14 years of work in the Grey Heron colony at Domänental, Schleswig-Holstein.
Interestingly, the height at which the nests were built is still very low, although it has changed from an average of 2.1 metres to 3.5 metres. High trees on this small island are seldom used for nesting. In 2024, the breeding season also began early with the first eggs laid in early February. In comparison to the 19th century today the breeding season starts 11 weeks earlier, due to climate change. Consequently, Grey Herons can now have a second brood. Some young birds are therefore not able to fly until September.
The Herons are flying enormous distances to catch food for their nestlings. Assuming an average distance of 10 km to the feeding area, which is visited twice a day, the birds cover 2,000 km during the breeding season of seven weeks. But 40 km could also be the distance. This, combined with the low food supply, could be the reason for the low number of fledged young birds. We must be aware that an average of only two offspring per pair in Domänental is comparatively low to the average in Schleswig-Holstein.
