The Moorhen and other waterfowl in the Schrevenpark, Kiel – a steady decline

The good watching conditions at a parkpond like the Schrevenpark offered chances for biological examinations of the Moorhen population. For the last 20 years local rails and anatides were deprived of their livelihood by a structural change of vegetation and the destruction of their nesting platforms. The number of breeding pairs of Moorhens went down from 13–15 in the sixties to only four in 2012. Fidelity to the hatching place can be estimated between 30 and 40 %. With a ten-plus year-old bird and one in its 11th year we find remarkable lifespans. Two different age patterns – one from 75 ringed birds and 36 findings, the other from 542 ringed birds with only 52 findings – are offered. For sexing a head-beak measure (KS) smaller than 5,80 cm for hens and larger than 6,10 cm for cocks is offered which can easily be applied. Three distant findings of G. chloropus are presented. The small Coot population Fulica atra which has disappeared now contained a locally hatching pair which together had a lifespan of 25 years in the Schrevenpark. Simultaneously with the expulsion of the local waterfowl the once rich stock of exotic waterfowl was abolished.
