Comments on the population and ecology of the common raven, Corvus corax

1. The inventory of ravens, which was supported by 376 employees, yielded 192 breeding sites in Schleswig-Holstein in 1965/66.
2. The predominance of beech as a nesting tree in 227 = 80% of 300 records reflects the almost exclusively wooded landscape in the main settlement area of the eastern districts. Thanks to the raven's adaptability, the choice of nesting tree depends on the types of forest available.
3. In the three years from 1964 to 1966, 70 ravens were found dead in our country. The main cause is believed to be poisoning by strychnine phosphorus eggs. In four out of five cases, the breeding results were positive when an adult bird died, with a reduced number of young.
4. The start of egg-laying for a possible new pairing within a breeding season after the death of the partner and a second clutch was around 20 April.
