The moors of Schleswig-Holstein and their breeding bird population

1. In view of the history of cultivation of Schleswig-Holstein's moors outlined in the introduction, it is foreseeable that if intensive moor cultivation continues at the same rate, the habitat of our moorland bird life will be so severely restricted in a few years' time that the complete disappearance of moorland birds from Schleswig-Holstein and, in the case of the water rail, from Germany will be inevitable.
2. According to their different origins, the moors of Schleswig-Holstein are divided into lowland and upland moors, the latter being further divided into three subtypes according to the varying degree of improvement and the associated differences in flora and fauna. The moors studied between 1966 and 1968 are listed and classified according to the above classification.
3. The special section contains information on the occurrence, distribution, biotope requirements and, in individual cases, the breeding biology, moulting and migration patterns of the moorland birds discussed. Quantitative surveys of the total population were carried out for the common sandpiper, curlew, black tern, common gull, short-eared owl, hen harrier and crane.
4. A number of moors are proposed for nature conservation in order to create a refuge for endangered moorland birds, enabling the undisturbed breeding and survival of the individual species.
