Unusual appearance of the Brent goose (Branta bernicla) in Kiel Bay in 1969

1. The strong presence of the Brent goose in 1969 in Kiel Bay, especially in the Kiel area, is compared with its occurrence in the years 1954-1968.
2. In the years 1954-1968, a total of 609 individuals were observed here, about 80% of them on their way south.
3. In 1969 alone, however, 1,175 individuals were observed, 542 of them (about 46%) on their return migration.
4. The 1969 migration began in the first ten days of October and lasted until around mid-November, with exceptionally high numbers passing through the Kiel Bay area on 11 October and 5 November.
5. In autumn, after two days of heavy migration, the resting places were above average in terms of occupancy: on 8 November, a maximum of 59 geese in three flocks were observed in the area of the Kiel Outer Fjord.
6. As in the years 1954-1968, the Kiel Bay area proved to be the main focus of the Brent goose population in 1969, with around 75% of the total number of geese observed.
