On the food acquisition of the yellowhammer (Carduelis flavirostris) in the Hamburg area

Information about the diet of the brambling (BUB 1969, ENGEL 1970, SCHMIDT 1968/69) is supplemented by observations from Hamburg.
1. There are 18 reports (384 individuals in total) of snow buntings feeding on birch seeds (Betula spec.) during snowy winter periods (December 1964, winter 1968/69, December 1969).
2. Since January 11966, there have been two feeding sites in Hamburg-Ottensen, where up to 50 specimens per day eat millet, gloss, nigella, turnip rape, chopped peanuts and fat. At least one other feeding site is suspected in Hamburg.
3. From 1967 to 1971, there were several sightings in a district of Hamburg where the linnets ate plane tree (Platanus spec.) or birch seeds and stayed near a schoolyard (bread seeds?!) and a feeding house.
4. On 21 October 1968, 10 specimens were observed on a ship in the harbour feeding on the remains of manioc roots, cornmeal and copra.
