Sharp decline in the breeding population of ravens (Corvus corax) in the Schleswig region

This study shows the decline in the raven population in a study area of 2,280 square kilometres in the Schleswig region, where 49 pairs bred in 1951, 36 pairs in 1965 and only 18 pairs in 1970. The accelerated collapse of this breeding population, which coincided with a lack of young raven associations, is attributed to increased human persecution (between 1964 and 1966, 75 dead birds were found, mostly near the breeding tree). However, the number of fledged young ravens per nest remained virtually unchanged at 3.0 to 3.3 in successful broods, so that indirect chronic poisoning by toxins that impair reproductive capacity can probably be ruled out.
