On the breeding occurrence of the common teal, Anas crecca, in Schleswig-Holstein

Abstract

1. A total of 79 breeding data were available for evaluation. They originate from all parts of the state, but predominantly from the western part of the Segeberg district.

2. Breeding occurs mainly in the raised bogs of the Geest, as the species prefers nutrient-poor, densely covered small bodies of water as breeding habitats.

3. Problems with population surveys are discussed. The breeding population in Schleswig-Holstein is estimated at approximately 70-100 pairs. Comparisons with previous years suggest an increase in population. Settlement density: 1.3 to 2.85 breeding pairs per hectare were recorded in raised bogs.

4. Observations on breeding biology range from territory occupation to leaving the breeding site. Egg laying begins on average in the second ten days of May.

5. Several references are made to gaps in knowledge. In particular, there is a lack of breeding data from the Schleswig region. The state's ornithologists are asked to remedy this deficiency through targeted observations.
