Abstract

Large flocks of northern shovelers (Anas clypeata) are currently present at at least 25 water bodies in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg during the moulting season or moulting migration. Several observations have been made at 18 water bodies. Approximately 30 to 500 individuals are found per water body; in Schleswig-Holstein, the total number is unlikely to exceed 1,500. Further moulting or resting places are to be expected. The importance of the individual sites varies greatly from year to year, apparently depending on the water level.
