Eine seit langem vergessene Beschreibung der berüchtigten Bergener „Spiele“ in einer Handschrift des 16. Jahrhunderts
Abstract
A 16th century German manuscript labeled as ‘Natural History of Portugal’
is assigned to the alchemist and physician Leonhard Thurneysser and kept at
the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin. Surprisingly it contains among its hundreds
of pages a short section describing the gruesome rituals of initiation at the
Hanseatic Bergen Kontor. These rites of passage are already known from
other sources, but this one is unknown to the majority of the historians of the
Hanse. This paper presents that text. In addition, it explains how Thurneysser
obtained this description in Lisbon of all places and included it in the diary
he brought back to Germany.
