Abstract

Fish (hering, in particular) and wine arrived on the Cologne market in the autumn, as a rule, coming from the north and the south respectively, and were distributed from there. If the Zuiderzee towns had complaints about wines they had received, they contacted Cologne. The same was true of the towns on the upper Rhine if fish was defective. Cologne forwarded the complaints to their point of origin. But Cologne witnessed a significant confluence of ideas and influences in other ways too. It attracted immigrants and students from the IJssel and Zuiderzee towns, as the burse at the university demonstrate.
