Ground-brood of Common Buzzard near Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein

A breeding attempt of Common Buzzard Buteo buteo is documented. The ground-nest with down feathers and egg remains was found well hidden under a fir. In the years before the birds had successfully nested on surrounding trees. Which circumstances triggered the decision breeding on the ground? How many ground nestings of Common Buzzard are not found?
