The red-breasted flycatcher, Ficedula parva, in the Hamburg area

1. Hamburg is probably located on the western edge of the breeding area. The local pied flycatcher population belongs to the southern Holstein region.
2. There is no evidence to suggest that the pied flycatcher has only become native to the Hamburg area in the last 100 years during a westward expansion of its breeding range. In the past 30 years, there has been no further spread beyond Hamburg.
3. To date, 16 locations in the Hamburg area (2053 sq km) are known to have pied flycatchers singing during the breeding season. The only breeding area among these is the Sachsenwald. In the Hamburg area, up to 15 males probably sing every year.
4. The first reliable evidence comes from the Sachsenwald (65 sq km) (2 July 1921). There has been annual evidence of their presence in two centres (Aumühle-Friedrichsruh; formerly west of Lindenallee, now Königsallee) since at least 1956. The breeding population may be around 5 pairs, with approximately 10 singing males.
5. Breeding and breeding attempts were observed in the Sachsenwald in 1925, in the 1930s, in 1957 and in 1962.
6. The preferred habitat is either uneven-aged and not too dense oak-beech-spruce forest or mixed oak-beech forest, which may contain individual spruce trees. Low undergrowth and a canopy closure of around 8/10 appear to be important. Unpaired males probably also sing in other types of forest.
7. They usually arrive in the second half of May, with the earliest date being 30 April. The start of their departure is unknown. A late sighting on 15 November 1959 is not unusual.
8. Three of the known highly individual singing red-breasted flycatchers were recognised in 1967 in the same territory after tape recordings made in 1966.
