The migration of the barnacle goose (Branta leucopsis) in autumn 1970

Abstract

The departure of the barnacle goose took place between 14 October and 15 November 1970 (154 observations, 9,171 individuals), peaking in the week from 29 October to 4 November (7,964 individuals = 87%).
The main migration over Schleswig-Holstein took place on a traditional migration route between 54.20 and 54.60 degrees north latitude. The number of geese at the resting places increased in parallel with the migration. A short rest period for fewer individuals took place mainly in the area of the beach lakes on the east coast. Around mid-December, there was another passage of barnacle geese (6 observations).
