Abstract

This paper describes the itinerary of Leo Frobenius’s reception during the 1920s and 1930s within the philosophy, art and literature of the Hispanic culture. The history begins in Spain with a polemic between the philosophers José Ortega y Gasset and Eugenio D’Ors. Then, it continues in Puerto Rico and Cuba with the poetic and artistic projects of Luis Palés Matos, Nicolás Guillén and Wifredo Lam. Finally, this reception ends in Cuba with the literary work of José Lezama Lima. My aim is to show how Frobenius’s ideas and works were used by several Hispanic intellectuals in order to articulate different notions of art and national culture.
