Abstract

In January 2012, investigative reports of the existence of an illicit nude video of ,indigenous' women shot by tourists on the Andamans and the subsequent probe into officials' liability hit the headlines in India for about two weeks. In this article I analyse the effects of and the contextual engagement with reports on the Andaman case within the wider social context of government administration in India. I argue that the recent paradigm in media anthropology on the interconnectedness between production and consumption in the case of research on news has to be expanded. This will allow us to understand and describe the effects of media reporting which emerge from diverse forms of everyday engagement with news coverage in settings far from the places of their origin.
